A BUSY North-East road was closed for more than three hours after several people were injured in a multi-vehicle smash.

Four cars and a van were involved in a collision on the A19 close to the Dalton Piercy turn off near Hartlepool, at about 2.15pm on Sunday.

Those injured included a 70-year-old woman who was airlifted to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, with serious head chest and leg injuries after being cut free from a car.

Two other men and a woman were also taken to University Hospital of North Tees for treatment.

Police said there was a number of walking wounded at the scene.

They thanked members of the public who gave their help prior to the arrival of the emergency services.

The road was closed in both directions while police carried out an investigation. Diversions were put in place and the road later re-opened at 5.45pm.

Police are now attempting to trace the driver of a silver Mercedes seen travelling northbound who officers believe may have witnessed the crash.

Witnesses should contact (01642) 326326, quoting reference U57909.
