HOPES are high tonight that the historic Zurbaran paintings are set to be saved for the region.
The Northern Echo understands that a wealthy benefactor has agreed to buy the 13 masterworks and hopes to put them on public display.
Any deal would also have implications for Auckland Castle - home to the paintings for 260 years.
The works of art have been under threat after The Northern Echo revealed a secret plan by the Church Commissioners to sell them.
They have hung in Auckland Castle, the palace of the Bishop of Durham, for 260 years and represent a plea for religious tolerance.
