A TALENTED teenager is to take on dancers from around the world at the Irish Dancing World Championships.

Kayleigh Doherty, 19, from RAF Leeming, North Yorkshire, will compete for glory in the solo and team events at the competition in Dublin next month.

She only took up Irish dancing as a 13-year-old when she attended the Phoenix Academy, at Catterick Garrison, with friend Alice Bradshaw.

“I went along and enjoyed it and now go there three times a week,”

said Kayleigh, who is an early years practitioner at Sunflowers Day Nursery, in Northallerton.

“I also go to Rochdale, near Manchester, each Sunday as part of the Phoenix scheme.

“I had to get through a qualifier in Gateshead in November to reach the world championships, and I was really shocked and pleased to get through.

“I am a little bit nervous and I’m working hard on my routine which consists of two dances of about one and a half minutes long.”

If Kayleigh gets enough points, she will be called back for a final dance. She took part in the team section at last year’s competition, which was held in Glasgow.
