A COUNCILLOR has been quizzed by police following complaints about comments posted on an internet forum.

Geoff Lilley spent eight hours in custody before being released on bail while further investigations are carried out.

The Hartlepool independent today told The Northern Echo: “I am very confident people will give me a fair hearing.

“I’m very happy to help police with their inquiries. I have complete faith in the system, and I have sought legal advice.”

Coun Lilley, 60, went to the town’s police station yesterday afternoon after hearing officers wanted to talk to him.

He said today that he had no idea why police wanted to question him, and was shocked when the reason was revealed.

It is understood that officers also want to identify other people who contribute to the website, High Tax Hartlepool.

Coun Lilley, a former bus driver, is believed to have made remarks about fellow councillor Marjorie James, of Labour.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Inquiries are ongoing. “A 60-year-old man from Hartlepool has been arrested on suspicion of anoffence under the Malicious Communications Act and has been released on bail pending further inquiries.”

Coun Lilley, who represents the Greatham ward, said: “I went to the police station voluntarily to be as helpful as possible.”
