Sad story on our front page this morning.

A charity for the homeless called the 700 Club is facing ruin after a bruising employment tribunal which pitched it against the Salvation Army.

In short, the tribunal ruled that the 700 Club has a legal responsibilty for the transfer of staff from a Salvation Army hostel which closed last year amid council funding cuts.

It seems to me that the 700 Club is guilty naivety for not heeding the warnings that it was likely to be liable for redundancy costs.

Nevertheless, it seems uncharitable for a relatively large and wealthy organisation like the Salvation Army to put the 700 Club to the sword.

And the wider question is about what message it sends to small charities and voluntary groups thinking about tendering to plug gaps in public services.

I hope a way can be found to save the 700 Club from financial ruin because it's a great charity with great people like Reverend Dr John Elliston behind it.

Meanwhile, our front page this morning also features the news about Andy Carroll's £35m move from Newcastle United to Liverpool to replace Fernando Torres who's gone to Chelsea for £50m.

It's a world of stark contrasts.
