THE January transfer window is coming to a close and we have observed daily updates of transfers, possible transfers, imaginary transfers and money-making agents all washing their linen in the public domain.

When I was much younger, transfers were so hush hush that sometimes, I understand, the player concerned wasn’t told until all matters had been agreed between the two clubs. Now the journeyman and his entourage have a field day, involving as many clubs as possible. I’m also amazed that a player sold for millions of pounds must be replaced by another one at the same or possibly larger fee. It begs the questions, why are we not unearthing suitable talent from our so called academies?

Do these institutions exist purely to give coaches (usually ex-professionals) something to do, or are they just a waste of money?

We hear about so few academy successes replacing our transferred stars, I find it difficult to name a team from these academies good enough to play in the Premier League. I do not know what the answer is but I am greatly bewildered by this whole subject, perhaps someone can put me right.
