A BOY who died after being hit by a van and a car on his way to school was today named as Alex Bradley.

The 12-year-old of West Heslerton, near Malton, North Yorkshire, was fatally injured while crossing the A64 in the village just after 7.40pm yesterday.

Today a statement released by his parents said: "Alex was the most wonderful son, brother and grandson. He is loved by many and will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

"Alex's family would like to commend the emergency services for their relentless efforts to save Alex."

Alex, of Scarborough Road West, was crossing the A64 just past the Stones Garage and was heading towards a bus stop when he was struck by a blue grey Renault Scenic and a white Ford Transit van.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service sent a doctor, a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance to the scene and initially treated Alex at the roadside before he was taken to Scarborough General Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Alex's headmaster at Norton College, Phil Loftus, said: "Alex was a very popular pupil and a friend to many.

"Since he arrived in year 7, it was clear that Alex was a bright and able pupil. He settled quickly and made friends easily.

"He often displayed maturity neyond his years and was always helpful. He engaged totally with all aspects of school life, academically and practically.

"Before the start of the school day he was often found helping out on the school farm and wanting to take part in sporting activities.

"Alex will be sorely missed by his friends, classmates and teachers at Norton College.

"Everyone at Norton College is devastated and we all wish to convey our deepest sympathy to Alex's family."

An inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned later this week.

The A64 was closed in both directions for just over eight hours as police investigated.

Traffic Sergeant John Clayton, of North Yorkshire Police’s roads policing group, said: "I am urging anyone who was in the area at the time of the collision to come forward.

"In particular. I need to speak to the drivers of two vehicles which passed through the scene a few moments after it occurred and ask them to contact me as soon as possible."

Yorkshire Ambulance Service sent a doctor, a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance to the scene and initially treated Alex at the roadside before he was taken to hospital.

Anyone with information should call TS Clayton on 0845-60-60-247.
