FRUGAL fashionistas are being offered a recession-busting way to tailor their wardrobes for the new year.

Cleveland College of Art and Design (CCAD) is to open its modern art workshops for a master class in fashion restyling and recycling.

Aspiring designers will be given the opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade to produce bespoke fashions as well as revamp existing clothes, to reflect current trends, and tailor garments for that perfect fit.

The five-week cut, mend and make workshop, starting on Tuesday, January 18, is one of a number of introductory short courses to be hosted by CCAD this month and next at its Green Lane, Middlesbrough, campus, with part two sessions running from March to April.

CCAD academic services manager Janette Garrett said: “The cut, mend and make workshop will be an ideal way for people to restyle their wardrobe on a budget and produce something totally unique.

“All of our introductory courses are aimed at beginners, but people more familiar with the basic techniques, and who want to develop their skills further, can enrol for part two.”

Courses include drawing and painting, digital compact camera photography, digital SLR camera photography and web design.

CCAD is also providing a textile home accessories and print techniques course, part one of which will be held at Green Lane and part two in its Church Square premises, in Hartlepool, to allow students access to specialist equipment.

Courses cost from £50 to £70.

“These courses really are a great way to learn something new for 2011, meet new people and have great fun,” added Ms Garrett. “There really is something for everyone.”
