A CONCERT in memory of a young man has raised £1,000 for a day centre he used to visit.

Greg Thompson was a regular visitor to the Havelock Day Centre, in Hartlepool, until he died earlier this year at the age of 22.

Despite suffering from a long illness, Mr Thompson was extremely popular at the centre and his uncle, Kev Sewell, organised a fundraising concert in his memory at the town's Woodcutter pub. It raised £1,010.

Mr Thompson's mother, Angela Thompson, handed over the cheque. She said: "The memorial concert was brilliant.

"Greg would have been very proud to know that the money raised in his memory is going towards helping people he cared so much about.

"I would like to thank all the people who donated for the raffle, the performers who performed free of charge, and also Kev Sewell - without him it would never have happened."

Violet Reid, development co-ordinator at the Havelock Centre, said: "Greg was a very special person who loved music. We all miss him ever so much."
