TWO proud great grandparents celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary, yesterday.

Percy and Amy Viggers, from St Aidan's Walk, Newton Aycliffe, spent the day reading the many cards they received from friends and family.

The couple, who have five children, 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, met in 1946 in Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk, while Mr Viggers was in the RAF.

The 83-year-old, who is originally from Coventry, was an armourer stationed nearby.

He left the service in 1952 and the couple moved to County Durham where he worked as a joiner.

Mrs Viggers, 82, originally from Winterton-on-Sea, was a maid in service and went on to work for Union Carbide in Newton Aycliffe for 26 years.

Mr Viggers said: "The secret for us was making our marriage vows work.

"We are not deeply religious but we have always taken them seriously."

Mrs Viggers said: "And we have always acknowledged that you have to work together in a relationship and pull together in the same direction."

The couple will enjoy a celebration dinner with family and friends today.
