A MAN was taken to hospital after being rescued from a flat fire.

Fire crews were called to Lindley Road in the Clifton area of York at 5pm today.

Two fire fighters wearing breathing equipment rescued a man from a ground floor flat.

He was given oxygen at the scene before being taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from smoke inhalation and lacerations to his face.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the cause of the blaze was believed to be the deliberate ignition of a sofa.

The flat suffered fire damage to the lounge and smoke damage to a further four rooms.
