YOUNGSTERS staged an “improv” version of the traditional Nativity story at a city centre church last night.

St Nicholas Church, in Durham, was filled with young angels, shepherds, inn-keepers and wise men, along with the customary Mary, Joseph and infant Jesus.

It was all part of a Messy Nativity fun evening to keep excited children occupied in the days leading up to Christmas.

The event also introduced many of the young participants to the Nativity story in an informal, fun manner.

More than 20 children took part, donning their respective Nativity costumes, making various Christmas craftworks and decorations, and performing a mini version of the story of the birth of Jesus.

There was plenty of food to tuck into before the event ended with a short service.

It follows similar Nativity events for children at the landmark Market Place church, staged to tie in with Durham’s recent festive lights switch-on and Christmas Festival weekend.
