QUESTION

My cat has had a cyst on her side which recently burst. The vet cleaned it and gave her antibiotics, however it didn't heal. The vet has now advised us to have the cyst removed when she has an operation in four weeks on her teeth. In the meantime we are cleaning it with warm salt water and an antibacterial powder. Is there anything else we should or could be doing to make her more comfortable and prevent the cyst from turning nasty.

ANSWER

My advice to you in this case is to get the cat booked in a lot quicker as this is only delaying what needs to be done. If the vet will not do the op then there will be plenty of others that can. Pain relief for cats is difficult as nothing is licensed for longer term. This should change later this year when Metacam receives a licence long term at 1-2 drops per cat per day for long term relief of pain and arthritis. Wound powder in my opinion is never very good and I last prescribed it for use over 10 years ago. Wound powder will dry out the wound and can allow infection to develop under the dry crust that then forms.
