QUESTION

I have been feeding since May a Persian cat who I think "may" be a stray as it always seems very hungry when it turns up at night for food. It scratches and bites so I don't really want to touch it any more, but is there anyway of telling if it is a stray or not? I have advertised on the net, but had no response. It seems to have fur missing on either side of its tummy. I am worrying that somebody somewhere may have lost this cat, but I may be worrying unecessarily. I would really appreciate your help.

ANSWER

There is no definite way of telling a stray cat but, by its behaviour, it would seem likely that the one you are feeding is a stray. If you could catch it and take it to your vet it could be scanned for a microchip (quite a few cats are identified this way now) but fif a chip isn't found it still doesn't mean that the cat doesn't or didn't belong to someone at some time in its life. Full blown feral or semi-feral pedigree type cats are rare.
