QUESTION
I am a bit perplexed by the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism in my very young cat. She has been vomiting several times a day for a month but other than that there are no symptoms. She is a beautiful, shiny, happy cat who eats, excrets and sleeps normally. We did have blood tests done and we were told that her thyroid was (a little high) 6.1. I have done quite a bit of research on the web and Im just not comfortable with the diagnosis. I started the drugs but am not comfortable with it. Could it be true in a cat so young or could there be something else? Paula
ANSWER
Dear Paula
Your cat would be the youngest that I have heard of with hyperthyroidism. I would suggest that you should have a repeat test done to check as thyroid problems can be primary or can be associated with metabolic disorders. I would be suprised to find a true hyperthyroid cat of this age unless the cause was spontaneous neoplasia.
