Like one of your readers, my cat has recently been prescribed metacam for arthritic hips. I have been instructed to put 10 drops in his food every day. I am concerned after reading your advice. He appears sleepy and has no energy, but I'm assured he's in no pain. Should I seek a second opinion? C. Coltart

Please stop the metacam immediately if you can as the dose you have been prescribed is dangerously high. Cats should be on a maintenance dose of between 1-2 drops once daily in food so 10 drops isin my opinion a 5-10 times overdose for longer term use. Check with your practice for further information but I would be getting the kidney function checked as well.
