A NORTH-EAST schoolboy’s artwork has been chosen to feature in a firework safety campaign message next year.

The winning artwork and slogan – Go to an Organised Display and Have a Safer Day – was created by Daniel Bard, 11, of St Paul’s Church of England Primary school in Ryhope, Sunderland.

He was one of hundreds of primary schoolchildren from across the city who took part in the annual poster design competition.

The competition, now in its 18th year, is organised by Sunderland City Council’s Streetscene Health Promotion Team, which visits primary schools ahead of bonfire night to deliver firework safety messages to more than 4,000 children across the city.

Children are then asked later by the team and their teachers to use what they have learned, to design a poster and devise a campaign slogan for the following year.

Daniel was presented with a framed copy of his poster and a £25 shopping voucher at a school assembly yesterday.

Portfolio Holder for Safer City and Culture, Councillor Denny Wilson, said: “Daniel has done very well to win from the hundreds entered.”
