A heavily-pregnant woman stole four bottles of spirits by stuffing them into a bag hung over her baby's pushchair, a court heard yesterday.

Dawn Virginia Foreman, 37, of Langdale Place, Newton Aycliffe, stole the spirits, worth £72.88, from Morrisons, in North Road, Darlington.

She took the bottles at 11.30am on Monday, June 19. After trying to leave the store without paying, she was stopped by staff, and police were called.

Foreman appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court yesterday and admitted theft.

She was given a 12-month supervised community order, but not made to pay costs due to her limited means.

She was on bail at the time of the incident, for what was described in court as "theft in very similar circumstances".

In October last year, she was given a conditional discharge for child neglect.

The court heard Foreman, who has four children, left her 11-year-old son in charge of her 21-month-old baby.
