DIVERSE sounds from around the globe will be heard in Durham City this weekend.

The series of open air concerts will be held in the grounds of the Durham Light Infantry Museum and Durham Art Gallery.

The eight-strong Zimbabwean group Umdumo Wesizwe will begin proceedings with a performance at 7.30pm tonight.

At the Folkworks Picnic, from 2pm tomorrow, artists will perform a range of music, song and dance, followed at 7.30pm by Irish songwriter Eleanor McEvoy.

On Sunday, at noon and 6.30pm, Durham-based band Horseplay will perform a programme of traditional music from the North of England and the borders.

The free weekend will end at 7.30pm when Scottish band Moishe's Bagel perform their mix of Eastern European dance music and Middle Eastern rhythms.

Neil Hillier, arts development manager at Durham County Council, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for people to experience some of the best musical talent from around the world for free."

"There is something for everyone to enjoy, so we are inviting people to bring along a picnic and take in what promises to be a superb three days of music."
