RESIDENTS' views are needed on plans to provide cash and advice to elderly and disabled homeowners living in poor accommodation.

Richmondshire District Council's draft private sector housing assistance policy follows a survey of privately-owned homes last year.

Grants, loans and advice could be available to older and disabled homeowners whose accommodation does not meet the Government's decent homes standard.

Council policy officer Kirsty Haslam said: "We have a target to ensure 70 per cent of homes where vulnerable people are living are deemed decent by 2010.

"There would be money available to help people improve their homes to be wind and weather-proof, warm and with modern facilities. The draft policy sets out the criteria for being eligible for financial assistance, and how the scheme would work."

The policy can be viewed online in What's New at www.richmondshire.gov.uk. Copies are available from the council on (01748) 829100.

Consultation ends on September 6, after which the policy is discussed by the community committee.
