A TAXI used in the much lamented police drama Heartbeat has fetched more than £4,000 after being sold at auction.

The 1949 Vauxhall L-Type Wyvern taxi, which featured in the show as the car owned by garage proprietor Bernie Scripps, sold for £4,025 when it went under the hammer at Bonhams, in Harrogate.

Heartbeat, which ran for 18 years and was cancelled earlier this year, was partly filmed at locations on the North York Moors.

Organisers described the sale of collectors’ cars, motorcycles and automobilia as a “resounding success”. Hundreds of lots were offered, raising a total of £809,404.

Ben Walker, head of Bonhams motorcycle department, said the sale room was packed with enthusiasts and collectors, with bidders from around the world.

The top-selling motorcycle was a Twenties Indian 600cc Scout, which exceeded its presale estimate of £9,000 to £12,000 to sell for £16,560.

A 1936 BMW 500cc R5 sold for £11,000, while a 1958 BSA 500cc Gold Star, which had seldom been used since its acquisition, fetched £13,225.

Other notable lots included a 1919 Harley-Davidson 998cc Model F that sold for £14,375 and a DMW 249cc Deemster police motorcycle that fetched £4,370.

Mr Walker said: “It was a fantastic sale – the 18th we have held here and as popular as ever. The room was packed with enthusiastic bidders, which translated into a successful sale.”
