SAFETY chiefs have pledged to crack down on illegal bonfires.

Council and fire service bosses launched a twoweek campaign at Durham Police’s headquarters, in Aykley Heads, Durham City, yesterday.

They hope to warn the public of the dangers of unauthorised bonfires and cut the number of unnecessary callouts to the fire service.

Residents are being asked to report any illegal woodpiles so they can be removed before they are set alight.

The campaign is being run by Durham County Council and the fire brigade through the Safe Durham Partnership.

Oliver Sherratt, chairman of the partnership’s antisocial behaviour group, said: “As well as being a direct danger to the public, deliberate and nuisance fires are a drain on the fire service’s resources and can divert crews from potentially life-threatening work elsewhere.

“Their removal is also costly and time-consuming for the council. Anyone suspected of building an illegal bonfire on public land could receive an £80 fixed penalty fine.

“Attending an organised event is a much safer way of celebrating November 5.”

To report an illegal bonfire, call 0300-123-7070.
