A MAN was fighting for his life last night after he was thrown from his car onto the opposite carriageway during a crash on the A19.

The two-car collision, on Sunday evening, involved a silver Ford Focus, carrying three men from Middlesbrough, and a grey Volvo, which contained a couple from York.

Both vehicles were travelling south at 7.30pm at the Black Swan flyover, near Crathorne, North Yorkshire, when the accident happened.

A 29-year-old man in the Ford Focus suffered multiple injuries, including serious head injuries. He was thrown from the car onto the northbound carriageway.

He was taken by air ambulance to The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where he was still in a critical condition yesterday.

All passengers were taken to hospital. The front-seat passenger in the Ford Focus sustained neck injuries, but the driver was not thought to be hurt.

The couple in the Volvo, who are in their early 50s, were also taken to hospital, with the woman suffering chest injuries.

The northbound carriageway was closed until 9.20pm and the southbound carriageway remained closed until shortly before 2am. Traffic Sergeant John Lumbard: “I ask that anyone who witnessed the collision, but was unable to stop at the time, contact the police.

“I would also like to thank all the motorists who stopped at the scene following the collision and helped us.”
