FOOTBALL hooligans who clashed with police at a North-East railway station have been banned from attending games for a minimum of five years.

Fifteen Magpies supporters appeared before Newcastle Crown Court after trouble at Central Station on August 8, last year.

All had previously admitted a charge of violent disorder.

Newcastle supporters tried to ambush Sunderland fans as police were escorting them from a train to the Metro station. One wielded an extendable baton and a smoke bomb was thrown.

Judge Beatrice Bolton said: “I have to bear in mind the comparatively limited nature of the violence and also the fact that you left the scene relatively quickly.”

Noel Renton, 33, of Aydon Walk, West Denton, was jailed for a year and banned from football for six years.

Darren Fryer, 39, of Leam Lane, Gateshead, Bryan Heron, 41, of Clayton Street West, Newcastle, and Lewis Comber, 18, of Elsdon Avenue, Seaton Delaval, North Tyneside, were all given 52-week prison sentence suspended for two years, tagged for six months and given 8pm to 6am curfews.

Joseph Mattison, 51, of Acomb Street, Gateshead, and Adam Nesbit, 41, of Tribune Place, Gateshead, were also given 52-week prison sentences, suspended for two years and tagged for six months, with curfew from 7pm to 7am.

Adam Ivison, 22, of Murrayfields, West Allotment, North Tyneside, was given a 45-week sentence suspended for two years. He was tagged for six months and his curfew is from 8pm to 6am.

David Taylor, 21, of Sinclair Gardens, Seaton Delaval, David Cook, 22, of Cromer Gardens, Gosforth, and Ian Chisholm, 47, of Westacres Crescent, Benwell, Newcastle, were given a 52-week sentence, suspended for two years and ordered to carry out 300 hours of community service.

Scott Mooney, 18, of Valley Road, Blyth, Northumberland, was given a 52-week sentence, suspended for two years and tagged for five months, with a 9pm to 6am curfew.

Christopher Mustoe, 22, of John F Kennedy Estate, Washington, Wearside, was given a 40-week sentence, suspended for two years and tagged for six months. His curfew is from 8pm to 6am.

Lee Wales, 23, of Prince Consort Road, Gateshead, was given a 40- week sentence, suspended for two years and tagged for four months.

His curfew is from 8pm to 6am.

Stephen Wales, 43, of Woodford, Gateshead, was also given a 40- week sentence, suspended for two years, but tagged for six months with a curfew from 7pm to 7am.

Daniel Routledge, 18, of Swarland Road, Blyth, was given 40- week sentence, suspended for two years and tagged for four months with a curfew from 8pm to 6am.

All of the above, barring Renton, received five-year football banning orders.
