FESTIVALGOERS can help create a mosaic which will go on show at the entrance to Knaresborough Castle.

The town's 'feva' - a festival of entertainment and visual arts - runs from August 11 to 20 and an arts trail is already taking shape.

The latest addition is a Roman-style statue at the Park Row entrance to the town. The artwork on a wall looks like a marble figure in a niche but is in fact painted in the trompe l'oeil style to make it appear three-dimensional. It was created by the festival's visual arts director, Julie Cope.

The feva arts trail will lead through ginnels and yards, visiting galleries, exhibitions and topiary. Visitors can also take part in a community mosaic workshop, Knaresborough Castle Through the Ages.

Entertainment during the event includes an opening concert featuring singer-songwriter Rory McLeod at the Frazer Theatre on August 11.

Classical concerts by the Dales String Quartet and Knaresborough Pro Musica mark Mozart's 250th anniversary year.

There is also Cajun, Celtic and folk music, a celebration of rock and roll and a picnic in the park with local bands.

Children's classic The Railway Children is performed in the open air, there is a poetry reading and a musical evening with veteran broadcaster Frank Wappat.

Street entertainment and the traditional town crier competition also feature during the festival, which is in its sixth year.

Information and tickets are available from the town's tourist information centre in Castle Courtyard, telephone (01423) 866886.
