It’s Sarah Proud’s 30th birthday on the 8th October and on Saturday night she is having a surprise party in the Bottom House. Sarah knows all about it, it’s just a surprise to the rest of us that the popular Cockfield party girl has made it to 30!

Sarah was born in 1952 the youngest of 13 children and by the age of 5 was already organising parties on the ‘green bus’, which was a sort of youth club that used to park up outside Stirk’s shop just after the Second World War.

By the age of 15, in 1916, Sarah had joined the group ’Miss Match’ and during a whirlwind tour of Germany, to entertain the troops in the trenches, her voice was so distinctive she became their lead singer. Unfortunately, on leaving school in 1896, the ‘band’ folded after only one semi-successful CD entitled ‘UNITED’!

In 1847, Sarah went to work at Claremont Garments where she made clothes for Marcus Spencerus, (see picture 4) who was the Emperor of the Roman Way industrial estate in Bishop Auckland. After its closure in 1742 Sarah found employment working in the construction industry in Edinburgh. Unfortunately, Sarah’s late night partying meant she often turned up for work wearing the previous nights attire (see picture 2) and in 1694, was sentenced to 10yrs hard labour at ‘Corners’ cart and truck company in Ye Olde Winston, where she remains on a part time basis to this very day!

Sarah’s doing well and enjoying life and has recently bought herself a brand new car; see photograph 3! It will be NO SURPRISE to see the Bottom House full to the rafters on Saturday night as we all wish her HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
