BOTANIST Professor David Bellamy yesterday opened a nature reserve in ancient woodland.
Durham Wildlife Trust has bought Milkwell Burn Wood, near Blackhall Mill, in the Derwent Valley.
It is home to rare wildlife and endangered wildflowers, with the trust planning a long-term restoration of the 80- hectare site.
The trust plans to change it from mixed woodland to native broadleaf woodland.
The woodland is used by foxes and roe deer and was important for red squirrels in the recent past, although recent sightings have been infrequent
