In these troubled economic times, with public sector cuts about to have an impact on us all, there are plenty of reasons to feel gloomy.
But there is an event taking place this weekend which is something to celebrate. It makes us smile, it makes us feel good, and it is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
I am proud to sit alongside Olympic 10,000 metre silver medallist Mike McLeod on the board of a charity which raises money to give youngsters a sporting chance.
And when Mike won the inaugural Great North Run, few could have believed that it would develop into the most iconic half-marathon in the world.
But that's what we have here in the North-East - an event which showcases our region like no other.
In the Saturday Spotlight section of tomorrow's sports pull-out, the 30 years of the Great North Run are remembered.
I hope it jogs some happy memories.
