THERE was delight and disappointment for two Chesterle- Street internationals when the Scottish Commonwealth Games team was announced.

Cross country champion Freya Murray was told that she could double up over 10,000m and 5,000m in New Delhi, but there was no place on the plane to India for Scottish 3,000m steeplechase champion and native record holder Emma Raven.

Murray, who races over 5,000m in the UK Challenge Final in Cardiff today, has had a superb track season after excelling over the country, winning the South African and Scottish titles. But her burning ambition was to represent her country over the two distances in October.

The 26-year-old said: “I am delighted Scottish Athletics has given me the chance to run both distances, which has been my aim all year.”

Raven suffers the frustration of seeing the steeplechase selection go to Texasbased Lennie Waite, whom she has beaten in two major events this summer.

But Raven, despite bringing her pb down from 10:32.02 to a Scottish native record of 10:05.92, was unable to obtain the 3,000m steeplechase qualifying time of 9:55, eventually running out of races, while Waite took advantage of perfect conditions in Poland in June to finish third in 9:54.88.

■ Morpeth Harriers scored a winning team double in the Durham City Summer Cross Country Relays at Maiden Castle, with Nathan Shrubb and Jane Mooney also running the fastest 3K legs.

Results - Men (3x3K): 1 Morpeth 28 mins 23 secs; 2 Sunderland 29.13; 3 Durham City 29.28.

■ The Inter-Counties Track and Field Championships are held today at Gateshead International Stadium.
