FIVE football fans were arrested last night after a match between Accrington Stanley and Newcastle United, police said.

Accrington fan Daniel Cruickshank, 18, of Church Street, Accrington, Lancashire, was charged with throwing a missile on to the pitch during the Carling Cup second round match.

It is understood police tried to arrest him outside The Crown Ground, when officers were attacked.

Jason Graham, 36, of Avenue Parade, Accrington, was charged with being drunk and disorderly, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

Two other men were given penalty notices for being drunk and disorderly, police said.

Several Newcastle fans were also arrested after running on to the pitch after the game, which the Magpies won 3-2.

Liam Gibson, 18, of Eastgarth, Newcastle, Lloyd Miller, 19, of Lambley Close, Sunniside, Newcastle, and David Collins, Chiltern Road, North Shields, Newcastle, were all charged with going on to a playing area at a football match.

All are due to appear before Hyndburn Magistrates on September 8.

A spokesman from Lancashire Police said: "The match had been a wonderful occasion with the majority of fans in really good spirits, which became marred by a small group of people becoming hostile towards the police following the arrest of a man for an earlier incident."
