RAF troops prepare for deployment TROOPS from the RAF Regiment have been carrying out a series of exercises in preparation for deployment in Afghanistan.

More than 120 men from 34 Squadron have been simulating battlefield incidents at the Catterick training area.

The exercises are preparation for when the squadron goes to Helmand province in October to protect the aircraft and airfield at Camp Bastion.

The squadron, based at RAF Leeming, will use a wide range of weaponry, protected mobility vehicles and surveillance capabilities to counter threats.

They will also conduct patrols and liaise with the local community as well as working within the base itself.

Wing commander Gus Powell said: “The training is demanding, logistically it’s a hard package to put together.

“It’s demanding for the troops who spend a lot of time away, on top of the time they’re deployed.

“But it’s demanding for a reason and that’s because it’s a demanding task when we get out there.”

Corporal Andy Branston from Markse, said: “Morale is good, we’re all ready to get going and get out there and do our job. But there’s an air of caution.”

Senior Aircraftman Jordan Lozman, from Redcar, said: “I’m a bit nervous, like everybody is, but it will be good to get away.

“With all this build up, I’d like it to hurry up and come now so I can get home, hopefully.”
