A MULTI-MILLION pound school got the royal seal of approval it was officially opened by the Duke of Gloucester today.

His Royal Highness, Prince Richard, opened the 16.4m St Aidans Academy, in Darlington, as part of his visit to the region.

He met staff and students at the academy, formerly Eastbourne School, which moved into its new building in Hundens Lane in September last year from its premises on The Fairway.

The visit by Prince Richard formally completed the move for the new Academy, which is sponsored by the Church of England's Diocese of Durham and holiday company Airtours founders David and Anne Crossland.

As he performed the official opening, Prince Richard, who is the Queens cousin, told an audience of invited dignitaries, staff and students: "I have heard about the history of this splendid building. As an architect, I am delighted to see it playing such a major role in your transformation. It has created a tone for education here.

"I hope the academy remains the success it clearly is for many years to come."

Principal Alison Appleyard said: "It was a wonderful experience. The Duke talked to the students and they talked to him and it was a real honour to show him round our new Academy. He showed so much interest in what we are doing here."

During his visit, Prince Richard met year ten students cooking.

Laura Dutson, 15, one of the students who talked to him, said: "He asked me what we were making and how long it would take to cook."
