AN old railway viaduct on the North Yorkshire coast is to be restored in a £100,000 scheme.
The century-old wing wall of the viaduct at Scalby, on the former Scarborough to Whitby railway line, which closed in 1965, is cracking.
Scarborough Borough Council's head of engineering, John Riby, said that the damage could result in it collapsing. He said: "This would result in the loss of the footpath and access across the bridge."
He said it could also affect the main gas and electricity supply for Scalby and Burniston, which runs along the viaduct.
The council's cabinet approved the scheme, subject to full council approval next month.
