SOCIAL club members got their own back on two youths who attacked them as they made their way to the premises, Durham Crown Court heard yesterday.

Scott Noble, 18, and 17-year-old Christopher Spinks were near South Moor Workingmen's Club, in Stanley, County Durham, having taken a mixture of valium tablets and wine, last July 17.

Lesley Kirkup, prosecuting, said a 62-year-old club member was punched by Noble as he approached the premises.

In self-defence, the victim landed several blows on Noble.

He and Spinks smashed glass and threw it at the man in the foyer, and then attacked another club member outside the premises.

He also fought back, striking Spinks several times, before restraining Noble by sitting on him.

The pair were arrested nearby, where Noble was carrying a 12in bread knife.

Stephen Thornton, for Noble said he was "extremely remorseful". Chris Morrison, for Spinks, said it was clear club members would not tolerate their behaviour.

Noble, now 19, of Hustledown Gardens, and Spinks, now 18, of Parmeter Street, both South Stanley, admitted common assault and affray.

Noble also admitted a further assault charge and possessing an offensive weapon.

Judge John Evans imposed 18-month community orders on both, including 150 hours unpaid work.

Both were ordered to pay £100 compensation to the second man attacked and Noble must pay a similar sum to the first victim.

Each was also ordered to pay £50 compensation for damage to the club door.
