STUDENT rowers managed to complete a gruelling 70-mile challenge - without ever leaving the warmth of a shopping centre.

Six members of Durham University Boat Club completed three marathons during a 12-hour challenge at The Gates shopping centre, in Durham City.

The club, which is sponsored by Deloitte, was raising money to improve facilities for its 40 members and volunteers collected cash during yesterday's challenge.

However, the super-fit rowers, who train twice a day, seven days a week, to keep in condition, managed to take the challenge in their stride.

Club vice-president Jamie Waldegrave said: "It has been tiring, but it has gone quite well.

"We had a really good morning and we're pretty confident that we will reach our target of £500."

Yesterday, the emphasis turned from water to dry land when a group of students did a charity step-a-thon.

Members of Durham University Charities Kommittee were put through their paces on step machines for nearly 12 hours in The Gates.

Last year, the organisation raised £200,000 for good causes in the area, and this year they hope to break through the £250,000 mark.
