PUPILS are to help clean up the environment around their school.

The youngsters from Oxclose Community School, in Washington, have volunteered to take part in Sunderland City Council's Just Bin It campaign in a bid to smarten up their neighbouring area.

David Hall, deputy headteacher, said: "We were concerned about the litter in the environment surrounding the school, so our pupils will now, under supervision, undertake litter-picks to ensure all areas are clean.''

The clean-up follows major works carried out in Oxclose village centre by Sunderland City Council and pupils will be joined by council staff in the continuing venture.

Ian Graham, park ranger at Herrington Country Park, and organiser of the clean-up event, said: "It's great to involve local school groups in the campaign.

"By demonstrating how litter impacts on beautiful spaces, it teaches the children respect for their surroundings and educates them from an early age about the damage and pollution litter can cause to green spaces.''

A further litter pick has been organised for today, by Durham Wildlife Trust, at Houghton Hillside Cemetery when children from Gillas Lane Primary School will help clean up the graveyard.
