RESIDENTS will get a different outlook on their village as it celebrates its history this weekend.

The tower roof of St Mary's Church, in Gainford, will be opened as part of an ongoing heritage project.

It forms part of a Victorian-themed weekend, marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of the village school.

Jenny Harrison, who is on the heritage weekend's organising panel, said: "The tower is never normally open and it's very rare for the public to have access."

Sports day takes place on Saturday on the green, starting at 1.30pm, but competitors will all dress in Victorian costume and take part in sports of the time.

Prizes will be handed out by one of the stars of Channel Four's Shipwrecked, Charlotte Freeman, who is from the village.

An exhibition of old prints will be on show in Gainford school all weekend.

Sunday sees a Churches Together family service being held at St Mary's Church at 2pm, as well as music on the village green.
