WITH World Cup fever gripping football fans, a Teesside school joined in the international spirit through a series of art workshops.

Youngsters from Grange Primary School, in Hartlepool, have been learning about the cultures of different countries across the world, many of which are appearing in this summer's football showcase.

Almost 50 pupils, aged between seven and eight, worked with sculptor Simon Jackson on a project called Sculpture Identity Environment - Can We Change Places?

They created 12, 3ft-high, 3D figures representing the different cultural identities of people across the globe.

The figures sported T-shirts using words, patterns or colours associated with the chosen country.

Anne Hayes, deputy headteacher at Grange Primary School, said: "These workshops are a fabulous way of improving the young people's creative skills and teamwork abilities, raising their levels of motivation and increasing their self-esteem."
