YOUNGSTERS helped launch three refurbished tennis courts at a park yesterday - as the Wimbledon fever starts to build.
The revamped courts at Ropner Park, in Stockton, have opened again, and children from the town's Oxbridge Primary School were the first to try them out.
As well as the three courts, there are new changing facilities in the new park pavilion.
Funding assistance for the refurbishment work came from Thornaby-based Impetus Environmental Trust.
Councillor Jean O'Donnell, cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture, said: "Tennis courts are a feature of many of our older parks, and I am delighted the impressive courts have been restored for clubs, schools and residents to use.
"I am aware local primary schools are now regularly using the park for a variety of sports, and I am sure the new tennis facilities will prove a smash hit."
David Scott, chairman of Impetus Environmental Trust, said: "It is a real pleasure to have been involved in helping to reinstate this superb community facility.
"Who knows, this could be the training ground of a future Wimbledon champion."
Stockton Borough Council is hoping to establish a partnership with local tennis clubs to manage the courts.
