A WOMAN from north Durham has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Lilly Ayre danced with family and friends at Hollie Hill Nursing Home, in Stanley, last Tuesday.
Mrs Ayre, who was born in New Brancepeth, Durham, was delighted to get a card from the Queen.
She worked as a cook and housekeeper in Jesmond, Newcastle, and Stockport, Manchester, before getting married.
Her late husband, John Ayre, was chairman of Brandon and Byshottles Urban District Council, before it became part of Durham City Council.
They had one daughter, Joan Ross, who lives in Bearpark, Durham, and two granddaughters.
Mrs Ross said: "We had a lovely party up at the home with the residents and staff and had a great time.
"She was up dancing and really enjoyed herself."
