Not too long ago, Malton trainer Julie Camacho threatened to pack up training, but thank heavens the talented Malton handler kept her licence, showcased in no uncertain terms by Rio Riva's moneyspinning 2005 campaign.
Consistency was Rio Riva's hallmark, only once out of the first three in six starts on turf.
Early in the year, he had the misfortune to run into Tax Free (see later in the list) when beaten by a short-head in a seven-furlong Thirsk maiden.
It seemed a narrow yet inconspicuous reverse, but the time told a different story as Tax Free developed into a top sprint handicapper. Rio Riva didn't make quite such startling headway as Tax Free, nonetheless he went on to pick up a fair event at Beverley in July, followed by an easy two length success in a 81-95 handicap on a trip to Pontefract Rio Riva clocked a quick time that day, inherent speed which, combined with his impressive physique prowess, is likely to serve him in good stead.
