OFFICERS have made more than 100 arrests during the first week of an initiative aimed at drink-related incidents.

When to Stop is the theme of a Northumbria Police campaign to tackle drunkenness, violence and disorder over the summer.

The initiative forms part of Chief Constable Mike Craik's pledge of total policing to tackle crime at all levels, which is supported by Northumbria Police Authority.

Sunderland police made 106 arrests from May 8 to 14 - 63 of these were for drunkeness, eight for assault and 35 for disorder, including two breaches of anti-social behaviour orders.

Chief Inspector Jo Miskimmin, Sunderland area command said: "Officers are conducting uniformed patrols in the busier areas of the city to reassure the public and to police the streets effectively.

"Police have also made 157 visits to licensed premises over the past week, to establish that they are being managed in a responsible way and to remind licensed premises that they must comply with the terms of their licence.''

Last Saturday, two pubs were closed on a voluntary basis for 24 hours, following disorder at the Brewers Arms, in Hetton, and the Boar's Head, in Hendon.

Police will continue to monitor these premises.
