A LEGAL challenge against the Government's decision to approve a new Tyne Tunnel has failed.

Friends of the Earth member and local resident Brian Atkinson challenged the validity of an environmental study on the impact of the tunnel.

The judgement means the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority can press ahead with the second vehicle tunnel.

Speaking after the judgement, authority chairman Councillor David Wood, said: "This is great news. The new Tyne crossing is vital to the economic prospects of Tyne and Wear and surrounding areas.

"It will stimulate investment and job creation, which will benefit local communities."

The 185-metre crossing will be alongside the existing tunnel.
