A PIONEERING religious project has been awarded £40,000 to work with pupils in the North-East.
The Schools Interfaith project was piloted last year in the Middlesborough and Ripon areas.
The Home Office-supported scheme looks to promote understanding among young Christians, Jews and Muslims.
Project co-ordinator, Eileen Bellet said, "Our hope is that, through challenging questions, learning about the similarities and differences within and across the major faith traditions, experiencing living places of worship and participating in a variety of creative activities, the children will come to their own conclusions about the communities in which they live."
The scheme was launched again at Ripon Cathedral yesterday for youngsters.
Five hundred children visited Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, mosques, a synagogue and a Hindu temple. They talked to members of various faiths about their beliefs on the tour.
The project was devised by Ripon Cathedral, the Bradford and Ripon and Leeds Joint Diocesan Education Team, and the Middlesborough Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education.
