A SERIOUS head on smash saw injured drivers airlifted to hospital and a road closed for over five hours.

Six people were airlifted to James Cook Hospital after the crash on the A170 close to Helmsley.

The crash took place at 5.20pm one mile west of Helmsley yesterday.

A silver Peugeot 206 was heading to Thirsk when it was in the head on collision with a Silver Ford Focus.

The Peugeot driver, 18, from Leyburn, suffered leg injuries, his front seat female passenger, 18, from Helmsley had minor injuries and a back seat female, from Catterick, had shoulder and chest injuries.

The male driver of the Focus, from York, had chest and head injuries, a 70-year-old female back seat passenger suffered arm and facial injuries and a front seat female passenger was uninjured.

The Peugeot driver is in a satisfactory condition with the other injured in a comfortable state.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance and a RAF Sea King rescue helicopter took the injured to hospital.
