A TOWN centre restaurant has introduced a no-smoking policy throughout the building after 73 years of business in Darlington.

Crombie's, on Tubwell Row, has removed its smoking section, and does not allow cigarettes in any part of the cafe.

The change, which was introduced on Monday, has already been a hit with customers, and will become a permanent policy.

Owner Fredrick Stehr said they were keen to move with the times, and the smoking ban was generally a popular choice.

"It is the way forward, it's what a lot of people want these days," he said. "After 73 years, we have quite a regular clientele who come in here, and most of them support it.

"Of course, some people do want to come in here and smoke, but most people do not - so we've had to compromise.

"It's proved very popular, and is something we'll continue with."
