A WEARDALE dad who launched a charity for local children with disabilities and learning difficulties has walked 100 miles in memory of another inspirational family man.

Alistair Howe completed the challenge at Wolsingham School and Community College over the bank holiday weekend under the banner A Century for Kenny.

In 29 hours and 35 minutes Mr Howe, from Frosterley, completed 375 laps of the athletics track.

The walk was a tribute to Kenny Walton, a former behaviour support assistant at the school, who died of a heart attack, aged just 47, in October 2003.

Mr Walton, from West Auckland, was a keen cricket player and was involved in local youth sports, particularly at St Mary's FC in Bishop Auckland, and raised money for school projects.

His wife Anne is a senior teacher at the school and the couple have two sons, William and Robert.

Mrs Walton said: "I am really pleased Alistair did this walk in memory of Kenny, I know the money will help the charity and it is exactly the kind of cause he would have supported."

Mr Howe and his partner, Helen Blackburn, whose own sons Jake and James are both disabled, started the charity Independence 4 Disability two years ago. It funds trips, specialist equipment and access to services for disabled youngsters and their families.

Mr Howe, 40, said: "The walk raised £400 towards the charity and still counting. It will pay for a good trip for about ten kids, disabled ones and their brothers and sisters, because it is important that they all enjoy time together. They get so much from outings."
