VOLUNTEERS are urgently needed to help with the work of a hospice.

St Cuthbert's Hospice, based in Park House Road, Durham City, is hoping to recruit extra volunteers once it opens its ten-bed in-patient extension.

Last year, St Cuthbert's celebrated its 18th birthday by launching the Key Appeal, backed by The Northern Echo.

Hospice staff and volunteers set themselves an ambitious target of raising £3.2m to fulfil their dream of opening an extension which could offer 24-hour specialist palliative care for terminally-ill patients.

The hospice is closing in on its target, and it is hoped that the extension will be able to take in patients later this year.

The hospice is now looking to recruit and train volunteers to help the present team.

Help is needed in five roles: receptionists, ward helpers, patient care volunteers, laundry helpers and companion and flower care volunteers.

Anyone who can give up a little time to help is asked to ring the hospice's volunteer co-ordinator on 0191-386 1170.
