LINKS between an Italian spa resort and one of the county's towns have been strengthened by a surprise visit.

Mayor of Harrogate Caroline Bayliss and her consort husband Tom took time out from their holiday to renew informal relations between Montecatini and Harrogate that go back to the 1950s.

Councillor Bayliss and her husband were holidaying in Florence, but decided to visit the resort, where they were warmly welcomed.

Coun Bayliss, who said she was bowled over by the Italian resort, said: "Between two and three thousand people still take the waters every day during the season.

"In the largest spa, where the water is still provided in three strengths, there are no fewer than 572 toilets.

"So I think the effect of the water needs no further explanation.

"Apart from taking the waters, the cure also consists of wonderful walks beautiful gardens, daily musical concerts, great shopping and all in a fantastic climate."
