DISABLED people in Teesdale look set to benefit from a new equipment lending service.

The Wheelchair and Mobility Loans Service lends out equipment free to local residents with disabilities.

The equipment is available for periods of between one hour and three months from a shop located within the Co-op supermarket in Horsemarket, Barnard Castle.

The facility has been set up by the Teesdale Disability Access Forum (TDAC).

TDCA campaign officer Anne Henderson said: "In the past, we have people who have needed to loan a wheelchair or mobility aid while recovering from a broken leg, or awaiting a permanent wheelchair to be delivered from hospital.

"Or it could be that they would like to go on holiday, or attend a family event but cannot walk as well as they used to."

The Co-op has allowed the TDCA use of the vacant retail unit until a new tenant is found.

Opening times for the loans service are from 10am and 1pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
